For school year 2009/2010 Kindergarten: grade K Wednesday, 3:30 – 6:00pm at Epworth Church Room 25 This group is for children who finished preschool and now go to Kindergarten. Prior knowledge of German is required to attend this group. In a fun and relaxed atmosphere, the children are given lots of opportunities to practice their German oral language skills, play with friends and get involved in arts and crafts projects as well as music activities and dance. Deutschgruppe 1: ages 6 – 7, 1st grade Wednesday, 3:30 – 6:00pm Epworth Church Room 30 This is a beginning German reading group. We are going to use German reading and writing materials (such as the "Fibel" and German "Schreibhefte"). The students will learn to recognize and identify most sounds and they will learn to read easy sentences and beginning level stories. Further focus is on the improvement of listening and the expansion of vocabulary. All skills are taught in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. A workbook will be provided by the teacher. Deutschgruppe 2: ages 7 – 8, 2nd grade Tuesday 3:30 – 6:00pm Epworth Church Room 25 To join this group, students have to be able to recognize German sounds and know basic spelling rules. Students in this group are able to read easy sentences and beginning level stories.We reinforce the student's knowledge of grammar and new vocabulary through language games, reading activities and art projects. More advanced spelling rules will be introduced. A new emphasis will be placed on writing in German. Workbooks will be provided by the teacher.
Deutschgruppe 3: ages 9 – 11, 3rd grade Tuesday 3:30 – 6:00pm Epworth Church Room 30 This early intermediate group focuses on reading materials as used in 3rd grade in Germany. The students engage more in independent as well as guided reading activities. To enhance the understanding of German, this group focuses on grammar rules and the further expansion of vocabulary. The students are given lots of opportunities to engage in creative and guided writing activities. Small drama performances are an integral part of this group. Deutschgruppe 4: ages 10 – 11, 4th grade Wednesday 3:30 – 6:00pm Epworth Church Youth Room This advanced intermediate German group focuses on reading and writing materials as used in 4th grade classrooms in Germany. The group will gain a deeper understanding of grammar and spelling rules and learn to apply them correctly in independent writing assignments. Furthermore, the students will engage in independent reading assignments and also discuss some age appropriate pieces of literature. Deutschgruppe 5: ages 10 – 12, 5th grade Tuesday 3:30 – 6:00pm Epworth Church Youth Room This early advanced German group focuses on gaining independent reading and writing. This class usually reads two novels per school year. We cover many different genres of writing including essays, letters, fiction, non-fiction descriptions, poems, and more. Furthermore, the curriculum will be enhanced by the inclusion of history, geography, social studies, arts and music of the German speaking countries. Deutschgruppe 6/7: ages 11 – 13, 6th – 7th grades Wednesday 3:30 – 6:00pm Epworth Church Room 29 This advanced German group is reading German literature across all genres and discusses the reading material in class as well as writes responses. This class furthermore covers more complex grammar and spelling rules and conventions.
Coming in fall 2010 Time and Room: tba BAKS+ offered an AP German preparation class in 2008/2009 for the first time. Students should be in high school in order to meet the age requirement for taking the AP German test. The areas of speaking, writing, listening, reading, plus a strong emphasis on grammar skills will form the focus of this class. A College Board workbook will be provided by the teacher. By the end of the class the students will be well prepared to take the AP German test at their local High School. |
